Mythology and Astrology

Astrology pulls much of its symbolism from Mythology. For example, the names of planets come from mythic gods. Mercury, lightning fast, delivering the messages of the Gods. Venus, the Goddess of love and harmony. Jupiter is expansive, lucky and parallels Zeus. Pluto is the God of the Underworld and pulls at the depth of each of us. Each sign of the Zodiac has a planetary ruler, and so takes on some of the colors of that specific planet as well.

Of course astronomers name planets, not astrologers. Interestingly enough, when new planets are discovered, their energies are particularly visible and identifiable in our world. Their names parallel the energies they represent.

Using these symbols and mythologies, astrology itself becomes very literal. Visit the Theoi Project, a Guide to Greek Mythology and Ancient Gods to learn more about the mythologies behind the planets and signs.
