When it Comes to Blogging, This Chick Writes Like a Dude

One of the first things I want to hit upon my return to Astrology Talk, is style of writing. Have you ever read something and you automatically assume things about the writer? I have been told my poetry is far too Neptunian for the liking of some Virgos. It's true, I have a strong Neptune and a lot of my poetry is pretty 'dreamy'.

On the flip side, I have read items and assumed the writer was a man or a woman. We all have done this. Come on, fess up. There's no shame in it. Toss out the "PC" thinking and face facts. We make these assumptions daily.

Well, no more guessing! Inspired by a New York Times article, the Gender Genie will tell all... Or will it? You can test a piece of fiction, nonfiction or a blog entry for the gender of the author.

I took a few of my own posts to test the results:

Mars and the Revamped Volvo Logo

Words: 391
Female Score: 303
Male Score: 576
The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

> Apparently my excessive use of the masculine words "what", "as" and "the" outweigh my excessive use of the feminine "with".

The Butterfly Effect and Astrology

Words: 541
Female Score: 268
Male Score: 856
The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

> "More", "are", "the" and "a" were my only words that had a score over 100... And they were all weighted as masculine.

No. NO! Not on a Void Moon!!!

Words: 625
Female Score: 522
Male Score: 835
The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

> The offending "what" and "the" don't outweigh the female "with" and "be".

They say that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, but expecting different results. Guess I should just face facts. I write like a dude. I wonder if this Gender Genie, which was spot on with most of the other authors who tried it, is like handwriting analysis.

Even if you try to disguise your handwriting, it's still you. If I tried to disguise my writing, would I be more feminine?

Try it out! The Gender Genie is lots of fun. Let me know how it goes!

Elsa!

So let me ask you, do you think I write like a guy? I think I am starting to suffer an identity crisis! LOL

This was fun! I love your writing style....but I would probably have guessed female....based on content and general sensitivities. I also tested out male for 5 of the 6 blog entries I submitted. I am very much female, or so I think....I wonder how others see me.

Melody -

I was pretty shocked about testing more masculine. The test was created by men, and most of the men got spot on results. You think it needs a woman's touch?
